Abstract
1287483 Oxidation catalyst MONTECATINI EDISON SpA 10 Dec 1969 [16 Dec 1968] 60179/69 Heading B1E [Also in Division C2] A catalyst composition comprises the elements molybdenum, vanadium, tellurium and oxygen, and optionally one or more other elements capable of combining with tellurium in the form of alloys or tellurides, the composition containing oxygen-containing compounds of molybdenum and vanadium in which the oxidation state of the Mo and/or V has been at least partially reduced to below the maximum possible by a heat treatment at from 300‹C to 550‹C in the absence of oxygen. The compositions are obtained by heating the molybdenum and the vanadium, for as their ammonium salts in the absence of oxygen, or as the oxides in the absence of oxygen and in the presence of ammonia, at a temperature of from 350 to 550‹C; the tellurium being added to the remainder of the catalyst either as metallic tellurium or as a tellurim compound either before or after the heat treatment. A preferred method is to evaporate to dryness an aqueous solution of ammonium para-molybdate and ammonium meta-vanadate and heat the resulting product in the absence of oxygen at 350 to 550‹C, for 2 to 16 hours, metallic, tellurium, tellurium dioxide or a metal telluride, such as nickel telluride is then added by mechanical admixture. The catalyst may be supported, those supports specified being silica, alumina, silica-alumina, pumice and silicon carbide. The catalyst may, also, be used in the form of a fixed or fluidised bed. In the Examples the tellurium is added as tellurium dioxide, nickel telluride, telluric acid (which in one case is reduced to metallic tellurium) and cobalt molybdenum telluride.
