Abstract
1286657 Opening containers PROCTER & GAMBLE CO 25 Sept 1969 [27 Sept 1968] 47321/69 Heading B8D A container having metal end wall 15 comprising a tear out panel 11 defined by a scoreline 12 and a pull tab 13 riveted to the panel, is provided with a flexible plastics protective flat ring 19 positioned adjacent the inner surface of the end wall and terminating in a smooth blunt inner edge 20 lying radially inwardly of the score line to prevent a consumer cutting his hand on the sharp edge 18 remaining after removal of the panel. The ring may be of polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride or polystyrene and is adhered to the end wall by hot melt, epoxy or ionomer-based adhesives. In alternative embodiments, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), the ring has a peripheral portion trapped between the double container side wall/end wall seam 17 or a stepped portion of the inner wall of said seam and may have an upstanding lip edge 45 or 60, Figs. 11, and 12 (not shown). Modified lip edges of hooked or tee-form are described, Figs. 13 and 14 (not shown). In further modifications, the ring may have ininterference fit with the container side wall, Fig. 7 (not shown), or be trapped between the end-wall and a groove 51 formed in the container side wall, Fig. 10 (not shown). In a final embodiment, Figs. 8 and 9, the ring is trapped between the end wall and a lining 48. The lining may be uncoated paperboard, wax or plastics-coated paperboard, or plastics, but preferably comprises a corrugated sheet of paper, plastics or glassine. The container may be a metallic container or a non-metallic container (e.g. plastics, fibre or foil-fibre container) provided with at least one metallic wall and may be of rectangular or oval cross-section.
