Abstract

1286651 Monitoring burners SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 10 Sept 1969 [12 Sept 1968] 44634/69 Headings F4B and F4T [Also in Division G1] In a tunnel burner 11, 12 fitted with a monitoring device, comprising a plug 10 closing off one end of the burner, the arrangement is such that only radiation from the walls of the combustion chamber 13 of the burner is monitored. Radiation from the wall 13 enters the plug 10 and is internally reflected so as to cause an unpolished button 6 on the plug to glow. Radiation from the burner flame is prevented from entering the plug by means of the shape of the walls of the burner part 11 and an axial member 16 projecting from an opaque portion 8 of the plug. Alternatively (Fig. 4) the plug (19) is metallic and has an eccentric bore housing a photo-electric detector (18). This detector is connected to a warning system and a system controlling the gas flow to the burner.
