Abstract

1286289 Blow-moulding; cooling G HOBERG 24 Oct 1969 [24 Oct 1968 23 Dec 1968 22 May 1969] 52329/69 Heading B5A Blow-moulded articles of synthetic thermoplastic material are cooled by a liquid medium, e.g. liquid carbon dioxide, the pressure of which is maintained, on introduction into the mould, above its triple point, preferably above the critical pressure. The apparatus, Fig. 1, comprises a coolant tank 10 containing a refrigerating machine 11 and connected to an insulated ring pipe 12 through valves 12a, 12b. In the ring pipe 12 is a circulating pressure pump 14 driven by a motor 13 and connected to it is a thermometer 15, a spring loaded safety valve 18, and a pressure gauge 17 through a shut-off valve 16. A branch union 19 is connected to the ring pipe and contains a valve 20, filter 21, and a flow control valve 22. A vacuum-insulated flexible tube 23 leads to atomizing nozzles 24 in the mould cavity 25 and on a neck-forming pin (40, Fig. 2, not shown). Blowing medium is supplied through a pipe 34 controlled by a valve 26. Outlet pipe 27 has a hand wheel emptying valve 28, a control valve 29, a spring loaded pressure-maintaining valve 30 and a pressuresensing device 32, isolatable by valve 31. Motor 22, valves 22, 26, 29 are controlled from switching position 33. After cooling the article, valve 22 is closed, valve 29 opened and the coolant and blowing medium are released, either to the atmosphere or to be reclaimed. Valve 29 may be opened and valve 22 closed by device 32 if the pressure becomes excessive. Any residue may be discharged through valve 28. Each nozzle 24 may be a single jet or a plurality thereof to be directed as desired. The coolant may be the blowing medium.
