Abstract
1285929 Casting machines and processes J-P BERNARD 22 Oct 1969 [31 Oct 1968] 51764/69 Heading B3F A method of casting metal components includes casting a component between a cylindrical reusable core 4 and a mould 1 surrounding the core, the mould having a sand dressing 5 over the mould impression and circulating cooling fluid through the core 4 and through channels 9, 10, 11 provided in the mould 1. When casting a pair of finned cylinders in a single mould 1, the mould comprises two halves hinged together and a single sprue 6 for supplying metal to the mould cavities (through a shower gate 54. Water-cooled cores 4 are mounted on a lifting device 19-21, 45 which also supplies water to the cores. Bayonet connections (18, not shown) join the lifting device and cores. In Fig. 6, a rotating table casting machine is shown in which after casting and cooling, the mould halves at a station 29 are pivoted open and the cores removed by a lifter 46 to be dipped into a tank 49 of dressing slurry. The castings are ejected and at stations 30-33 the moulds are respectively cleaned, stripped and relined. Dressed cores are inserted into the moulds at a station 36. The mould halves are pivoted to a closed position at 37 and pouring takes plate at the next station. Casting processes.-After pouring molten metal the cores are at first allowed to heat and expand. Coolant is then passed through the cores so they contract. This facilitates removal of the cores from the casting. Cooling is so controlled that the molten metal solidifies from the cores outwardly thus leaving sound bores in the castings. The coolant cavities 9, 10, 11 are arranged selectively to remove heat from the castings to avoid piping.
