Abstract

1285560 Automatic voltage and current control WENTGATE ENG Ltd and R E TRILLWOOD 8 Oct 1969 [15 Oct 1968] 48781/68 Heading G3R [Also in Division H1] Electron beam welding apparatus comprises a filament 11 producing an electron beam directed through a magnetic lens 15 on to a workpiece 16, the voltage applied between members 11, 16 being maintained at a desired valve by a control loop which varies the firing angle of a thyristor 31 in series with the primary winding of a high voltage transformer 25. The control loop comprises an amplifier 27 receiving an error signal derived from comparison of a signal from voltage divider 22 with a reference signal 26, a bi-stable trigger circuit 28 receiving the amplifier output and a ramp waveform produced by a circuit 29, and a differentiator 30 producing the firing pulses for the thyristor 31. Stabilization of the beam current is provided by a control loop comprising current sensing resistor 33, reference circuit 34, amplifier 35, bi-stable trigger circuit 36, differentiator 37 and a thyristor or Triac 38 controlling the power supply 39 for a bias electrode 12. Sensing resistor 33 also controls an overload cutout 40 which switches off the thyristor 31 if the beam current becomes excessive. A programme circuit 41 determines the rate of increase and decrease of beam current and the duration of the welding current. Filament 11 is supplied by a circuit comprising an A. C. voltage stabilizer 21 and an auto-transformer 20 feeding A. C. to the supply 18. Various operating conditions of the apparatus are discussed.
