Abstract

1285494 Suspension levelling systems FICHTEL & SACHS AG 8 Oct 1970 [25 Oct 1969] 48019/70 Heading B7D In a vehicle suspension system having air springs 2a, 2b associated with suspension struts 1a, 1b connected through a conduit system to an air compressor 4 and a height reducing valve 7 controlled by a level-regulating switch 9, the spare wheel 12 of the vehicle is utilized as an air storage chamber for supplying the compressor 4. The pressure in the spare wheel 12 is maintained at a pressure higher than is needed for carrying the vehicle, and should the pressure therein fall below a predetermined value a change-over valve 11 connects the compressor inlet to atmosphere. When the suspension level is too low a motor 5 which drives the compressor 4 is energized by the switch 9 through a relay 8, and when the level is too high the switch 9 energizes the valve 6 so that air from the springs 2a, 2b flows back to the spare wheel 12 which is at a lower pressure. A relief valve 7 prevents excessive pressures in the system. Air is supplied to and withdrawn from the springs 2a, 2b through a distributor 3 which prevents pressure equalization between the springs under unequal loading. In a modification, a solenoid in the change-over valve is energized when the suspension height is being lowered so that air from the springs flows back into the spare wheel even if the pressure therein is below the predetermined value.
