Abstract

1285438 Paving machinery BRITISH RAILWAYS BOARD 19 April 1971 [2 March 1970] 9814/70 Heading E1G [Also in Division G3] A surface forming machine Fig. 2 comprises a vehicle running on caterpillar tracks 1 attached to a frame 11 supporting a power unit 2 and a driver's cab 3 on adjustable crosstubes 4, 5. The cross-tubes are mounted on side beams 7 and are adjustable in height with respect to the frame 11 by hydraulic jacks 9. A slip-forming plate 15 is adjusted in conformity with the movement of the cross-tubes by being suspended by swinging links 14 from the cross-tubes and is additionally movable transversely by hydraulic jacks 16. The slipforming plate is changed when the length of the cross-tubes is adjusted. The lateral position and height of the machine is conventionally controlled by a guide wire, not shown, which on a curve forms a series of chords between reference points. To interpolate between reference points the arrangement for following the guide wire is adjusted in accordance with a punched tape programme. The arrangement comprises for each component of the attitude of the plate 15 parallel air jets 37-40 Fig. 5 supported on a plate 50. Between the pairs of jets is movable, in dependance on the position of the slip forming plate relative to the guide wire, a member 27 which selectively cuts off the air flow from a jet to a pressure transducer, not shown, operating a switch controlling a solenoid valve for positioning the appropriate jacks to restore that attitude of the slip-forming plate at which the arm 27 lies between the jets, as shown. The plate 50 is adjustable incrementally by the selective directional actuation of a motor 52 from a timer 54, is that the attitude of the slipforming plate is adjusted in accordance with the programme. The programming system, Fig. 6, comprises a tape 55 which is moved in synchronism with the machine and bears punched holes which are read pneumatically by air jet devices 60, 61 connected to transducers 64, 65 actuating switches for determining the energisation of the timer 54 and the direction of rotation of the motor 52. A zeroing device 68 allows the tape 55 to be driven only so far and then cuts out the drive by a micro-switch 69. The drive is re-started when the machine passes a reference point on the guide wire 18. In an alternative embodiment, the machine is controlled in accordance with the programme by a laser and photocell arrangement. The control is then stated to be fluidic. (For Figures see next page)
