Abstract

1285209 Electrolytic production of tetraalkyl lead compounds CONTINENTAL OIL CO 4 Nov 1969 [4 Nov 1968 2 Oct 1969] 53911/69 Heading C7B [Also in Division C2] In a method of producing tetra-alkyl lead compounds electrolytically using a cell comprising a lead cathode, an anode of a material resistant to an attack by bromine, and a current-permeable partition between anode and cathode; the catholyte comprises one or two alkyl bromides, the alkyl group having 1-3 carbon atoms, either tetrabutyl ammonium bromide or tetrabutyl phosphonium bromide, and water which is present as a solvent. The cathode may also contain an alkyl bromide solubilizer, e.g. acetone, tetrahydrofuran, acetonitrile, propionitrile, a water soluble ether or a ketone. The anolyte may comprise water and a current carrier such as a bromide or carbonate, tetrabutyl ammonium or phosphonium bromide, or ethylene bromide or dibromide. Bromine produced at the anode is recovered by reaction with ethylene and an alkyl chloride to regenerate alkyl bromide for circulation to the cathode compartment.
