1284789 Metal-vapour lamps PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 10 Dec 1970 [13 Dec 1969] 58685/70 Heading HID A double-walled low pressure (p<150 Torr) sodium vapour lamp includes sodium vapour and Indium in the proportions by no. of atoms: 55%<In/(In+Na)<95%, and the lamp is operated with the temperature of the wall of the discharge tube greater than 260‹ C. and the sodium vapour unsaturated. The ranges are chosen to maximize the product (lumens/litre) x (lumens/watt). The temperature of the tube wall is maintained by providing a transparent coating 7 of indium oxide which reflects infra-red but transmits the principal sodium wavelengths. In an example 37.5 mgs. Na and 1250 mgs. In are used together with a rare gas and a wall temperature of 350‹ C. Bulges 9 in the wall of the discharge tube serve to maintain Na and In evenly distributed in the tube. The tube wall may alternatively be heated by separate heating sources or the lamp may be used in a substantially closed space fitting.
