1284706 Reclining seats BREMSHEY A G 19 April 1971 [22 Aug 1970 7 Nov 1970] 20537/71 Heading A4J In a railway carriage seat assembly the individual seats 3 are movable forwards on guides and during this movement each back-rest 2, which is hinged at 1 to the seat, swings backwards and downwards, being guided by supporting members 11, on brackets 15, running in guides 12. The lowermost position of the back-rest is determined by stops 18 in the guides; in an arrangement in which opposing seats can be brought into abutting relation, as indicated, the stops may be positioned differently for the respective seats so as to provide higher and lower end sections of the bed. In the form shown, the seat is guided by members 6<SP>1</SP> on rearwardly-extending arms 5 engaging guides 7 supported at the front by a cross-beam 19, which also supports the back-rest guides 12. The seat 3 is slidably supported on the beam 19, and its underside is faced with yielding resilient material, which may be ribbed, to hold the seat frictionally in any set position. The beam 19 also supports one end of fixed members 21, carrying arm-rests 22, at the end of the row of seats. Intermediate arm-rests 23, Fig. 4 (not shown), which can move into recesses between adjacent seat backs to provide a continuous back surface, are hinged to brackets (29) on the carriage wall 9, their movement being limited by stops (32, 33). The guides may have openings to allow withdrawal of the guiding members therefrom to allow removal of the seat and back from the frame. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the guides are of more complex form, and the rear part of the seat is provided underneath with wedge-shaped skids to raise it, to make the upper surface of the seat horizontal, by engaging the cross-beam (8), when the seat is pulled forwards.
