Abstract

1284643 Control of D.C. motors CROMPTON LEYLAND ELECTRICARS Ltd 5 Jan 1971 [20 Jan 1970] 2654/70 Heading H2J A vehicle traction motor M is energized by batteries or battery sections 1, 2 which are initially connected in parallel and subsequently in series by carbon-pile regulators P1, P2, P3. Initially, the regulators P1, P2 are gradually compressed and P3 is left uncompressed; when P1, P2 are fully compressed P3 is compressed to connect the batteries 1, 2 in series, the current through P1, P2 being finally blocked by rectifiers R1, 1R2. Regulators P1, P2 may be replaced by a single regulator P1/2. There may be two motors M1, M2, Fig. 3, controlled by further carbon-file regulators P4, P5 and a rectifier R3. Initially, regulators P4, P5 are uncompressed so that the motors are in series across the supply, these regulators being gradually compressed to connect the motors in parallel. Thus in conjunction with the circuit of Fig. 1, the circuit of Fig. 3 permits the voltage across each motor to gradually increase from zero to “, from “ to ¢ and from ¢ to the total voltage of the batteries 1, 2. In a further modification, Fig. 5, employing regenerative or rheostatic braking, F represents the series field winding of the motor having armature A, the braking being controlled by a carbon-pile regulator P6. For rheostatic braking the connection X is omitted and line Y is connected to a resistor.
