Abstract

1284398 Coating webs KODAK Ltd 30 Oct 1969 [31 Oct 1968] 51581/68 Heading B2L [Also in Division Dl] In the coating of webs with photographic emulsion, the emulsion is stored in a heated tank which holds enough emulsion for several hours operation, at a temperature insufficiently high to cause heat-deterioration of the emulsion, and is passed to the web-coating device through a heat-exchanger which heats the emulsion without evaporation to a higher temperature which would be sufficient to cause heat-deterioration if the emulsion had been stored at this temperature. The heat-exchanger may be controlled in response to the temperature of the incoming emulsion and may be arranged to stop heating when the emulsion is not flowing. The coating device may be heated to maintain emulsion temperature. The further heating may be effected by means of a heated pipe around the supply pipe, or by addition of an additional heated component to the emulsion just prior to coating. In an example, paper is coated at 54‹C with a silver chloro-iodide emulsion which has been stored at 35‹C.
