Abstract

1284091 Induction brakes M BAERMANN 13 Aug 1969 [31 Aug 1968] 40529/69 Heading H2A In an adjustable induction brake, e.g. of a vehicle, comprising, in the embodiment shown, a magnetic field producing inductor 6 separated by an air gap 26 from an induction member 2 in which induction currents are induced one, e.g. 2 of these components being stationary and the other, e.g. 6 being rotatable, the induction member has inside the member low resistance conductors connected in at least one closed circuit to high resistance conductors (35), Fig. 4, mounted on or remote from the member whereby braking torque produced in the former conductors is dissipated as heat in the latter conductors, and the brake stationary component in this case the induction member 2, is formed as two axially separated relatively turnable parts each having equally spaced pole elements, and which can be turned by up to one pole pitch to adjust the braking torque. The rotatable inductor 2 comprises, fixed to a shaft 1 to be braked, a non-magnetic hub 20 carrying wafer-shaped chordally magnetized permanent magnets 21 interspersed with ferromagnetic polepieces 22 retained in the hub by T-shaped fixing parts 23 and provided with a shortcircuit winding 40. Fan blades (37), Fig. 4, impel cooling air over the high resistance conductors (35), and the low resistance conductors are constituted by windings 28 on the said parts which are formed by laminated silicon steel pole rings 24, 25 and are turnable within bearing baths 39 by a lever 33 operating via a pinion 31 and toothed racks 29, 30. In another embodiment, Figs. 6 and 7, the induced member is a single, wound, stationary, part, and the rotatable inductor also carries a winding (42) excited via a rectifier (46) by a dynamo (43) whose rotatable induction winding (45) is excited by two relatively rotatable parts somewhat similar to those in the embodiment shown and producing the field by either permanent- or electromagnets. Part of the energy produced may be used to drive motors or be stored in accumulators.
