Abstract

1284038 Two part couplings INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 22 Sept 1970 [15 Oct 1969] 45013/70 Heading H2E A socket board connector comprise an array of U-shaped members 20 having contact carrying arms 22 and force bearing arms 34, arranged such that a channel, into which floating force exerting member 42 may be inserted (Fig. 2) is formed between the sides of the ends 36 and 30 of the force bearing arms and contact arms respectively along each side of an inserted circuit board 12. Contact areas 24 contact lands 26 on the circuit board, the force exerting member causing the contacts on each side of the board to exert an equal pressure. The force exerting member 40, Fig. 1, may be secured to a pivoted block 44 so that the contacts may be lifted clear of the board 10 by camming action of members 50 against surfaces 48. The block pivots around 46, and the members 50, Fig. 4, are independently operated by a slide mechanism 62. The arrangement shown in Fig. 1 relates to a printed circuit board 10 immersed in liquid and a board 12 in air. The capacitance of the member 20 may be varied by holes in the central portion, Figs. 3B, 3C (not shown), and the arrangement of end 30 may be varied to provide a wiping action or to accommodate variable "land" thickness on the circuit board, Fig. 3D, Fig. 3E (not shown). Chemical milling may be used to provide thin contacts. (For Figures see next page.)
