Abstract

1283858 Knock-down containers GENTEX CORP 24 Nov 1970 [29 Jan 1970] 55863/70 Heading B8P A knock-down container comprises base, side, front, back and top panels, the side and rear edges of the base panel and the side edges of the back panel and the corresponding lower edges of the back and side panels and the rear edges of the side panels being provided with interengaging grooves and lips, and the side panels being held erect by spring-biased catches 62, 88 on the back panel. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1-12, the top panel is removable for loading, the side and lower edges of the front panel and the front edges of the side and base panels also being provided with interengaging grooves and lips, 110, 74. The front panel 64 is also provided with a pair of spring-biased latches 88 for engagement with the side panels. The top panel is located on the container by guides (126, 128) at the rear of the side edges, interengaging lips on the rear edge of the top panel and the top edge of the back panel, and a latch mounted on the front panel. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 13-17, the container is loaded from the front, the side and rear edges of the top panel and top edges of the side and back panels having interengaging grooves and lips. The lower edge of the front panel and front edge of the base panel are provided with interengaging arcuate hinge portions (166, 168), the side edges of the front panel have members (174, 176) defining a recess for the front edges of the side panels, and a keeper (190) on the front panel is engaged by latches (186, 188) on the top panel. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 18- 20 both the top and front panels are removed for loading. The rear edge of the top panel is connected to the top edge of the back panel by interengaging lips. The side edges of the front panel and front edges of the side panels are provided with widely-spaced interengaging lips allowing the front panel to slide into position, and the bottom edge of the front panel is provided with a downwardly extending element (214) and the front edge of the base panel is provided with two elements (206, 208) forming an upwardly directed opening to receive the element (214). Latches 230, 232 connect the front and top panels. In modifications of this embodiment, the front to side panel connections may comprise resilient locking elements (244) on the front edges of the side panels and retainers (246) on the side edges of the front panel (Fig. 21); the front to base panel connections may comprise a downwardly extending lip on the lower edge of the front panel and an upwardly extending lip on the front edge of the base panel (Fig. 22) or may comprise an upwardly extending lip on the lower edge of the front panel and a downwardly extending lip on the front edge of the base panel (Fig. 24); flanges (262) may be provided on the front panel and have openings for snap locks on the side panels (Fig. 23). Gaskets 112, 78 are provided in all embodiments to about the edges of the lips. The panels of the containers each comprise a sheet of urethane foam having skins of glass fibres and epoxy resin or of aluminium sheet and may be reinforced around their peripheries by aluminium channels and interiorly by corrugated aluminium sheeting. Skids are provided on the base panel.
