Abstract

1283602 Impact resistant vinyl aromatic polymers BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 18 Dec 1969 [6 Jan 1969] 777/69 Heading C3G A toughened vinyl aromatic polymer in which the rubber is in the form of particles of average diameter in the range 1 to 20 microns is prepared by a process which comprises dissolving a rubber in a vinyl aromatic monomer and prepolymerizing the monomer under conditions that result in phase inversion in the presence of a mixture of two initiators, one of which promotes more than 7% by weight graft polymerization on the polymerization initiated and one of which promotes less than 7% by weight graft polymerization on the polymerization initiated under the conditions of the polymerization stage, and completing the polymerization in a second stage, the ratio of the initiators being selected to give rubber particles of the desired size. The monomer may comprise a minor amount of acrylonitrile. Specified high grafting initiators are benzoyl peroxide, tertiary butyl perbenzoate, perpivalate, peroctoate or perisononanoate, and dicumyl peroxide. The low grafting initiator is, e.g. lauroyl peroxide or azo-diisobutyronitrile. In the examples, a solution of polybutadiene and polystyrene in styrene is prepolymerized in the presence of benzoyl peroxide and lauroyl peroxide and with incremental addition of water and, in one example, addition of a further amount of the latter peroxide, the prepolymer obtained being suspended in water and polymerized using a mixture of tertiary butyl perbenzoate and dicumyl peroxide, or benzoyl peroxide, as catalyst.
