Abstract

1283586 Flaw testing REPUBLIC STEEL CORP 29 July 1969 [9 Aug 1968] 38102/69 Headings G1N and G1S A defect detecting apparatus for elongate workpieces such as bar stock or tubing has a defect detector H adjacent to rollers 12 and 14 which constrain the workpiece against lateral movement and thus cause it to move in a straight line adjacent the rollers. Rollers 11, 13, 15, 12 and 14 advance the workpiece while rotating it and constitute a bar straightening device. Detector H comprises a pick-up coil 36 which, through a control circuit Fig. 1a (not shown) causes a defect marking device M to mark any defects. Detector H and marker M are carried from arm 35 fixed to the machine by adjustable clamp 34. The pick-up coil is attached to arm 35 via gimbal mountings and a pivoted arm of adjustable length Figs.3 and 4 (not shown). The marker M comprises a cutting wheel driven by an electric motor pivotally attached to arm 35, Fig. 5 (not shown). Both the marker and the detector are movable into and out of operating position by double acting pneumatic piston arrangements. The beginning and end of a workpiece are sensed by flaps engaging the workpiece and operating switches Fig.6 (not shown) and the control circuit withdraws detector H just before the end of a workpiece, and returns it to its operating position just after the beginning of the next workpiece.
