Abstract

1283565 Stabilized maleic anhydride HALCON INTERNATIONAL Inc 17 Dec 1969 [30 Dec 1968 18 March 1969] 61539/69 Heading C2C Maleic anhydride, obtained, for example, by the vapour phase oxidation of benzene, naphthene or butene, is colour-stabilized by the incorporation of a colour-stabilizing amount of one or more compounds selected from alkali metal chlorides, bromides and sulphates, alkaline earth metal chlorides, bromides and sulphates, barium nitrate, silver chloride, HBr and HCl. Preferably the stabilizer is present in an amount of 1 to 500 p.p.m. by weight on the maleic anhydride and is added to the molten anhydride. The most preferred stabilizers are CaCl 2 , BaCl 2 , Ba(NO 3 ) 2 , NaCl and HCl (anhydrous or aqueous).
