Abstract
1283444 Heating elements KANSAI HOON KOGYO KK 6 Nov 1970 [10 Nov 1969 24 Sept 1970] 52839/70 Heading B5N [Also in Division H5] A flexible planar heating element comprises an electrically resistive porous non-woven fabric 1 of felt or paper containing carbon fibres in mutually contacting relations, two spaced electrodes 4, 5, in contact with the fabric, and two or more synthetic resin impregnated sheets 2 arranged to sandwich the fabric and electrodes to seal them from the ambient atmosphere, all the components being united together as an integral element by heat-pressing them together. The fabric 1 is a mixture of carbon fibres and unmeltable insulating fibres such as glass, asbestos, word pulp or man-made fibres. Sheets 2 are paper or cloth impregnated with diallyl phthalate resin or benzo-guanamine resin, epoxide resin, unsaturated polyester resin, melamine resin or phenol resin. The carbon fibres are obtained from petroleum pitch, cellulose fibres, polyacrylonitrile fibres or polyvinyl alcohol fibres. The spaced electrodes are linear metal foils 3, Figs. 1-3 (not shown), or comprise terminal wires 4, 5, with electrode branches 41, 42, ... and 51, 52, ... , spaced at predetermined intervals. Each terminal wire 4, 5, may be replaced by a plurality of such wires sharing the current, Fig. 7 (not shown). The flexible heating elements are applied to heating a tank or conduit containing liquid or gas, Figs. 10, 11 (not shown), or may be embedded in concrete to effect floor heating or melting of snow on roads, the element then having perforations through which the base and surface concrete layers unite, Fig. 12 (not shown), or are laid on a floor under a carpet to effect space heating of a room, Fig. 13 (not shown), or are bonded to a roof plate to melt snow on roofs, Fig. 15 (not shown). A heating panel is constructed by bonding the flexible element to the surface of veneer board, hardboard, plywood, slate, metal plate, heatinsulating plate such as foamed polyurethane &c., possibly with a decorative surface, and is used in construction. The desired properties of the carbon fibres and the heating element are specified.
