Abstract

1283043 Oleophilic graphite BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 7 Oct 1969 [8 Aug 1968] 37829/68 Heading C1A [Also in Division C5] A suspension of a graphite, called in the Specification oleophilic graphite, is prepared by grinding graphite in an organic liquid in the presence of an elementary halogen except fluorine, or an interhalogen compound, neither of which additives must react with the grinding liquid, until a surface area of at least 20 m.<SP>2</SP>/gm. is attained. Preferably the organic liquid has a surface tension less than 72 dynes/cm. at 25‹ C. and a viscosity less than 30 centistokes at 38‹ C. The organic liquid may be an aliphatic compound, with straight or branched chain, saturated or unsaturated; a cycloaliphatic compound, which is saturated, unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted, or an aromatic compound, substituted or unsubstituted. The preferred liquid is a paraffin. The graphite content of the suspension may be less than 50% by weight. The preferred interhalogen compound is a diatomic compound e.g. iodine monochloride which may be present in an amount up to 20% by weight based on the weight of the graphite. The grinding is preferably performed in the absence of air. The oleophilic graphite may be separated from the suspension. Lubricants may be obtained by mixing the oleophilic graphite with a base oil.
