1282993 Gas detectors N TAGUCHI 22 May 1970 25013/70 Heading G1N In a device for indicating when the concentration of reducing gas (examples given) or smoke or other suspended particles in air exceeds a limit, the charge in conductivity of a lumped mass of N-type or P-type metal oxide semi-conductor (examples given) upon contact with such gases or particles is utilized to trigger an alarm, a heater being provided to maintain the temperature of the semi-conductor in its most sensitive range. As shown, the lumped mass 56; formed by compression forming, sintering, or brushing with a suspension of powdered semi-conductor material in a suitable medium, is provided on an insulating plate 40 e.g. of ceramic and has electrodes 42, 48, electrode 48 also acting as a heater. In an alternative, Fig. 3 (not shown), the coiled electrode 42 is replaced by an electrode (70) formed by evaporation or baking on the plate 40. The plate 40 may be omitted, Fig.4 (not shown).
