Abstract

1282952 Guiding webs CONSOLIDATED ELECTRONICS (SALES) PTY Ltd 25 Nov 1969 [29 Nov 1968] 57525/69 Heading B8R An edge-sensing device for detecting deviations of a moving web from a desired path comprises a body portion 9 formed with an edgereceiving slot 11; a pair of opposed jets 14, 15 fixed in a housing 12 removably mounted in the body portion 9; and a fluid control valve assembly 17 including a spool valve member one extremity 20 of which is spring-loaded against one face of a diaphragm 22 having its other face communicating with an air space 23 leading to the jet 15. The valve assembly 17 is described with reference to Figs. 3 to 7 (not shown), and includes a fluid inlet port 28 and a fluid outlet port 29. In operation, transverse movement of a web edge in the gap 11 or transverse movement of a mechanical baffle disposed in the gap and linked to a mechanical edge-sensing device remote from the gap, causes variations in the amount of air received by the port 15 and hence in the pressure acting on the diaphragm 23. The spool valve member operates in response to the resulting diaphragm movement to control pressurized fluid passing through the valve assembly 17 and this fluid is used to actuate conventional web positioning means of which suitable arrangements, one incorporating an anti-hunting system, are described with reference to Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown).
