Abstract

1282879 Making paper yarns COURTAULDS Ltd 4 Dec 1969 [5 Dec 1968] 57817/ 68 Headings D1F D1W Paper yarns are made by print-bonding a paper, slitting the paper along lines parallel to the length of the paper and twisting the strips into yarns. Print-bonding comprises printing a pattern onto the paper to create bonded areas on the paper. An adhesive may be printed on or if the paper incorporates fibres soluble in a solvent or plasticisable by a plasticiser then solvent or plasticiser is printed on. If the paper has thermoplastic fibres a heated welding head prints the pattern. The pattern may comprise bars transverse of the length of the paper or bars parallel to the length of the paper. In the latter case the cut strips are arranged to have a bonded portion and an unbonded portion lying along their length. The paper may be of wood-pulp fibres or regenerated or synthetic fibres or blends thereof. The fibres may be of regenerated cellulose e.g. flat fibres collapsed from a hollow inflated state; cellulose acetate and cellulose triacetate; polyacrylonitrile, including copolymers of acrylonitrile and one or more copolymerisable monomers; modacrylics e.g. acrylonitrile/vinylidene chloride copolymers soluble in acetone; polyamides; polyesters e.g. polyethylene terephthalate and its crystalline copolymers and polypivalolactone; and polyethylene and polypropylene. The paper may be slit by a row of rotary blades or stationary knives. The strips may be twisted into yarns e.g. by a ring twister.
