Abstract
1282720 Toughening glass TRIPLEX SAFETY GLASS CO Ltd D G GIDDINGS and D D MURPHY 29 Dec 1969 [8 Jan 1969 24 June 1969] 1262/69 and 31952/69 Heading C1M Glass (e.g. soda-lime-silica sheets) of thickness 4-12 mm. is toughened by heating to near its softening point (e.g. 650-740‹ C.) and cooling rapidly with an oil which contains 0À01 to 0À07% by weight of a liquid whose boiling point is lower than the flash point of the oil. The oil is preferably maintained at a temperature above the boiling point of the said liquid and below the flash point of the oil, any of said liquid lost by vaporization being replaced. The said liquid may be carbon tetrachloride, toluene, benzene, methanol, ethanol, t-butyl alcohol, acetone or xylene. The oil is preferably one which has a flash point of 220-310‹ C. and a viscosity of 300-1000 centistokes at 38‹ C. The toughened glass preferably has a central tensile stress of 500-120 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> and a surface compressive stress 2-4 times the tensile stress.
