Abstract

1282634 Pigment / polymer compositions BALM PAINTS Ltd 22 Aug 1969 [23 Aug 1968] 42033/69 Headings C3B C3P and C3R [Also in Division C4] Particulate solids of particle diameter 1-700 microns comprise 75-95% by wt. pigment and 25-5% by wt. polymeric binder, the pigment volume concentration being less than 82%, and the pigment having an oil absorption of 90 maximum (Gardner-Coleman method A.S.T.M. D-1483-60). Numerous pigments are specified, in particular inorganic white or colourless primary pigments and extenders. The binder is such as to be compatible with but inert to a film-forming polymer medium in which the solids are to be incorporated. The solids may be prepared from a solution of polymer in a non- aqueous liquid containing a dispersion of pigment, by emulsification in water in the presence of a colloidal suspending agent, and removal of the non-aqueous liquid. In examples, particulate solids are prepared and used in coating compositions as follows: (1) TiO 2 -polymethyl methacrylate solids of 12 microns, added to an acrylic latex coating composition containing further TiO 2 , water, sodium hexametaphosphate, partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate, and a surfactant; (2) solids as in (1) but of 200 microns; (3) TiO 2 -methyl methacrylate/ethyl acrylate/methacrylic acid copolymer solids of 25 microns; (4) TiO 2 -vinyl acetate copolymer solids of 20 microns; (5) clay-polymethyl methacrylate solids of 30 microns; (6) and (7) TiO 2 - polymethyl methacrylate and TiO 2 -polybutyl methacrylate solids of 12 microns having greater than the critical pigment volume concentration of TiO 2 ; (8) TiO 2 -styrene copolymer solids of 10-80 microns; (9) TiO 2 -cross-linked epoxy resin solids of 15 microns are prepared from a paste formed from epichlorohydrin/bisphenol epoxy resin, polyamide resin as cross-linking agent, and TiO 2 in toluene and amyl acetate, the paste being added to aqueous part-hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate and hydroxyethyl cellulose, and poured into water to allow particles to settle; they are then filtered off and dried, and are then added to a safflower oil-modified alkyd resin coating composition containing TiO 2 , mineral spirits, and Co and Pb naphthenate driers.
