Abstract

128,242. Blum, C. June 28, 1917. Torpedoes, locomotive; launching torpedoes.- Consists in a combination of two torpedoes adapted to be dropped from an aircraft as a single unit and to separate out on striking water, while remaining connected by a line so as to descend in spiral curves for the destruction especially of submarine vessels and mines. As shown in Fig. 2, two torpedoes 8, 9 are connected tail to tail by friction bolts which are pulled out by vanes 36 when the torpedoes fall in the water, valves being simultaneously opened to start the propelling-engines of the torpedoes. A line 21 is then paid out from reels 20 in the torpedoes, the eccentric pull of this line, together with the eccentric formation of the noses 10 of the torpedoes, causing the torpedoes to be propelled in spiral curves, Fig. 1. The explosive charges of the torpedoes are fired under any of four conditions, namely (1) on impact by contact fuses 13, one at the end and four round the nose, (2) at a given depth by a hydrostatic fuse, (3) after a given time by a time-fuse started by the fall in the water, and (4) when the motive fluid is exhausted or shut off, by a spring-striker released by the fall of the fluid pressure. One torpedo is made heavier than the other to ensure its striking the water first. The torpedoes may be propelled electrically instead of by fluid-pressure engines.
