Abstract

1282411 Treating oil pollution; cement CEMENT MARKETING CO Ltd 31 July 1969 [2 May 1968] 20815/68 Headings C1C and C1H A composition for treating oil polluted water comprises a powdered cement the particles of which have been rendered hydrophobic by a coating of an oleophilic material insoluble in water. Portland cement, high alumina cements, blast furnace cements or lime-pozzolara cements may be used. The coating material may be a natural or synthetic fat or oil which may have free carboxyl groups, a fatty acid such as stearic acid or oleic acid, or a cationic surfactant. Stretches of oil-polluted water may be treated by distributing the composition on the water in the form of an airborne spray. The composition may also be added to oil-contaminated water in the tanks of ships prior to discharge of the water.
