Abstract

1282315 Ratchet mechanisms; pipe couplings BROWN BOVERI & CO Ltd 19 Sept 1969 [21 Sept 1968] 46381/69 Heading F2G and F2Q [Also in Division G6] A linear friction ratchet for imparting stepped motion to an elongated member 4 connected to a regulator or shut-off rod 15 of a nuclear reactor, comprises a double-acting fluid operable piston 1 rigid with a tube 2 surrounding the member 4, a clutch 3 to connect the member 4 to the tube 2 during a drive stroke of the latter, and a brake 7 to hold the member 4 stationary during a return stroke of the tube 2. The clutch 3 and brake 1 comprise tubes coiled round the member 4 and inflatable by pressure fluid under the control of valves 6. The brake 7 is mounted in a fixed tube 8. To move the member 4 rapidly in an emergency, pressure is applied to a piston 10 rigid with the member 4, clutch 3 and brake 7 being released. To indicate the piston positions, permanent magnets 14 in the pistons 1, 10 actuate contacts (not shown) in a fixed central tube 13 as the pistons pass the contacts, to provide output signals. The valves 6 are connected to pipes leading to the clutch, the brake, and the pistons, by automatic sealing valves, Fig. 2, so that when a valve 6 is removed for maintenance, the withdrawal of its union 18 allows a spring 21 to bring a valve disc 19, having an annular gasket 23, against a seat 22 to prevent loss of pressure in the device. In place of the fluid-pressure operation of clutch 3 and brake 7, mechanical or electromagnetic actuation may be used.
