Abstract

1282305 Oligomerizing olefins ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 30 April 1970 [1 May 1969] 22299/69 Heading C5E Olefins are oligomerized or co-oligomerized in the presence of a catalyst system comprising (1) a salt or chelate of a Group VIII transition metal, e.g. nickel acetylacetonate, (2) an electron donor of formula YR 3 or R 2 Y-(CH 2 ) m -YR 2 in which Y is a Group V element, R is H or hydrocarbyl and m is 0, 1 or 2, e.g. triphenyl phosphine or tricyclohexyl phosphine, and (3) an aluminium compound of formula AlR n X 3-n where X is halogen, R is hydrocarbyl or alkoxy and n is 1-3, e.g. aluminium ethyl dichloride or ethyl aluminium sesquichloride, the catalyst being activated in the presence of a solvent and a C 2-12 olefin for 1-15 minutes at a temperature of 0- 60‹ C., the activation temperature being higher than the reaction temperature which is itself below 20‹ C. Examples describe the dimerization of propylene.
