Abstract

1282094 Hydrostatic transmission JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 24 Oct 1969 [25 July 1968] 35478/68 Headings F2C and F2D In an hydrostatic transmission comprising an axial piston pump 1 and a motor 3 both including cylinder blocks 8 abutting a ported member 10, turning of the member 10 about a fixed axis X is effective to vary the transmission ratio, and is effected by a rack 13 meshing teeth 12 on the periphery of the member 10, the rack 13 being formed on the piston 14 of a servo and fluid being introduced into opposite ends of the servo cylinder 21 at a pressure dependent on (a) engine speed as represented by an enginedriven gear pump 43, (b) the pressure in the high pressure delivery or return port 18 or 19 respectively, interconnecting the pump and motor, and (c) the position of the engine throttle. Engine-driven pump 43 delivers via a throttlepositioned valve 45 to passage 47 connected to passage 48 and then via shuttle valve 49 or 52 to the lower pressure port 18 or 19. Pressure relief valve 58 is subjected to opposing pressures from ports 18 and 19 to relieve pressure in the lower pressure port. Differential pressure across valve 45 acts on valve 72 to disconnect conduits 67, 68 to opposite ends of servopiston 14. Manual F-N-R valve 76 connects 68 or 69 to exhaust. The valve 45 is positioned by a throttle pedal 42 acting through linkage 101 and a cam slot 102 in member 104 is positioned by piston 14 acting via a roller 108. Pressure from valve 45 also acts on a spool valve 89 to feed back to the piston 96 positioning the fulcrum of throttle linkage 98, 99. Release of fluid from servo cylinder 21 is effected through either axial bore 36, 37 in the piston and radial bores 38 or 39 which communicate with a helical groove 35 in a rod 25 and having an orifice 34 communicating with an axial bore 32. The bore connects with outlet 24 connected to passage 69, and the rod 25 may be turned manually to connect groove 35 with bore 38 and/or 39.
