Abstract

1281945 Subaqueous transducers WYLE LABORATORIES 15 Oct 1969 [15 Oct 1968] 50687/69 Heading H4J An underwater electro-acoustic transducer Figs. 1, 2, has a plurality of I-sectioned beams 10 fitted together. The radiating surface of the transducer, preferably cylindrical, is formed of a plurality of adjacent sections of the beams 10. Each beam 10 has a web portion extending transversely to the surface part. Electrostrictive elements 12, e.g. of lead zirconate, are fixed on both sides of the web portion, preferably in notches. Bus-bars 20 are positioned between and in electrical contact with the elements 12 and, are co-extensive with the beams 10. They connect to a strap 22 connected to a plug 31. The beams 10 are connected to a cover plate by compliant stainless steel straps 24 to a cover plate 26 connected to a strap 28. Straps 24 permit radial movement of the beam cylinder. A stainless steel tube 40 is welded to a bottom plate 42 and a flange 44 is welded to the top of tube 40. The top cover plate 26 is sealed with an 0-ring 48 to the flange 26. The centre of the tube 40 is open to water to reduce buoyancy. A swivel bolt assembly 52 is provided. The assembly may be flushed with notrogen through a gas inlet and exhaust valve 54. A cylindrical rubber outer diaphragm 60 is secured by compression bands 62, 64 and provides an impedance match to water. It is protected by a stainless steel grid 66. Legs 70 are welded to the bottom plate 42. In other embodiments (not shown) the transducer has equilateral spherical triangular surfaces which form the sides of a regular polyhedron. Alternatively the transducers may have the shape of "spherical square" or regular "spherical pentagons". The transducer may be used in sonar applications, for communication using voice fre] quency transmission and in the reception of acoustic signals as a hydrophone.
