Abstract

1281658 Assembling X-ray tubes PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 April 1971 [25 Feb 1970] 22296/71 Heading B3A [Also in Division C1] A method of assembling an X-ray tube comprises sealing metal rings 4, 5, to a glass envelope 1, the glass having substantially the same coefficient of thermal expansion as has the metal rings, and then welding the cathode assembly 2, and the anode assembly 3, to the rings. Rings 4 and 5 are held in coaxial chucks and sealed to the envelope 1, after which annealing is carried out. Oxide layers &c. are then removed from the rings by chemical or mechanical means such as sand blasting, and the seals are tested for leakage, and any leaks made good. The anode and cathode assemblies are spot welded to the rings using argon-arc welding. Nitrogen is passed through the envelope by means of an exhaust tube 10 during welding.
