Abstract

1281420 Welding by fusion NIPPON KOKANKK 19 March 1970 13443/70 Heading B3R [Also in Division H2] A T-joint between substantially mutually perpendicular steel plates 11, 12 coated with primer or paint is effected by fillet welding simultaneously at both joint corners, and blow holes, piping or other defects are eliminated by supplying to a pair of leading electrodes 13 1 , 13 2 a welding current sufficient to burn the coating while depositing a preliminary weld, and supplying to at least one pair of trailing electrodes 14 1 , 14 2 a total welding current that is greater than the total leading electrode current and is sufficient to again melt the preliminary weld and disperse gaseous bodies. The leading and trailing electrode angles with the plate 11 are respectively 50-60 and 45-50 degrees. As shown, the welding current is supplied from 3-phase A.C. via a transformer 16 having delta-connected primary windings. The primary and secondary windings between terminals UV are divided, and the resulting pair of secondary windings are connected at u 1 , u 2 to the leading electrodes 13 1 , 13 2 . The undivided secondary windings between VW and WU are connected at v, w<SP>1</SP> to the trailing electrodes 14 1 , 14 2 . The terminals v 1 , v 2 , w, u of the secondary windings are star-connected to the plate 11. This circuit provides for the leading electrode current being half that of the trailing electrodes and for arc stability by minimizing the earthing current. In Fig. 8a (not shown), two pairs of trailing electrodes are connected to two pairs of secondary windings between the terminals VW and WU so that all of the three pairs of electrodes receive the same current.
