Abstract

1281091 Echo sounders; gate and store circuits MARCONI SOUNDING DEVICE CO Ltd 24 Oct 1969 [9 Jan 1969] 1311/69 Headings H3T and H4D In an echo sounder the distance indicator and/or recorder is made insensitive to occasional spurious echo signals by deriving a voltage proportional to the echo time, comparing this derived voltage with the voltage in a storage device, varying the stored voltage so as to follow the derived voltage, and actuating the indicator and/or recorder with the stored voltage. In the Fig. 1 embodiment a transmitter/receiver unit TR coupled to transducer unit T.D. provides a D.C. voltage (V1) proportional to echo time and this voltage forms one input to comparator C, the second input (V2) being obtained from a storage capacitor K via buffer amplifier A1. Monostable PG is triggered by each acoustic pulse transmission and drives a double staircase generator S. If V1 is greater than V2, one half of generator S is enabled by a first output voltage from comparator C and provides a positive staircase voltage for increasing the stored voltage V2. If V1 is less than V2 the other half of generator S is enabled by a second output voltage from comparator C and provides a negative staircase for decreasing V2. The monostable PG pulse width determines how closely V2 will follow V1. V2 is amplified at A2 to actuate the indicator and/or recorder R.
