Abstract

1281075 Character recognition COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE THOMSON HOUSTON-HOTCHKISS BRANDT 21 Aug 1969 [21 Aug 1968] 41862/69 Heading G4R In a character recognition system, the symbols on a document to be read are selected in turn by a multifacet rotary mirror and presented for simultaneous optical comparison with different reference characters, the highest correlation being detected by a unit having automatic threshold regulation. The comparison uses a correlator for each reference. Each correlator is followed by a respective lens and photodiode, the photodiodes feeding the unit referred to, which is transistorized, to identify the character to a computer which is also supplied with the character location. The multifacet mirror reflects each character in a line on the (stationary) document, in turn through a lens to an image multiplier, then the document is moved incrementally to bring the next line into position. Alternatively, the document is stationary throughout and an incrementally rotating mirror selects the lines in turn for supply to the multifacet mirror. Alternatively, the document moves continuously and the rotation axis of the multifacet mirror is skewed to compensate. Defocussing at the line ends is compensated by cyclic translation of the last-mentioned lens, or by using a corrector lens with a cylindrical curve adjacent the document, or by the document to a concave cylindrical surface by suction. The image multiplier uses plane mirrors arranged on a paraboloidal surface or lenses arranged on a spherical surface.
