1279818 Stud and socket fasteners ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS Inc 14 Nov 1969 [16 Nov 1968] 55918/69 Heading E2B A male part of a releasable snap-in fastener has first and second pieces 8, 2 which are of plastics material, the first piece 8 having a part-spherical stud 9 on a dished plate 7, there being a bore passing axially through the stud and the plate, the second piece 2 having a shank 5 on a dished plate 4 and a slot 3 extending axially back from the free end of the shank, the shank of the second piece being fastenable into the bore of the first piece, and the stud being releasably insertable in a snapin manner into a socket. In the construction shown the male part is moulded. as a single unit with the free end of the shank of the second piece joined to the entrance of the bore in the first piece by an easily severed web. As shown the shank has shoulders 19, 20 which are engageable with an annular shoulder 18 of the stud portion to prevent separation of the two portions. The dished plate 7 has annular rib 15 which is received in a annular groove in the plate 4 with sheet material to which the part is secured trapped between the rib and groove and between the two plates. The plate 4 carries a gripping means 27 which is ribbed. The female part is intended to be secured either to sheet material or to a button 16 by a rivet 30 with the locating member or members 26 locating it in an aperture in the button. When a single locating member is provided it is in the form a wall which extends outwardly from a wall 24 which defines the socket. When a plurality of locating members are provided they are in the form of projections extending from the wall 24.
