Abstract

127,971. Goold, L. W., (Continental Lens Co.). June 8, 1918. Lenses, grinding and polishing.-In a machine for grinding single-focus or multi-focal lenses, the lens 10 is mounted on a holder 9, adapted to be rotated by means of a driving-shaft 4, which may be mounted either concentric with, or at various degrees of eccentricity to, the axis of the shaft by means of sleeves 8<1>, 8<11> adapted to fit on the tapered seat 8 of the shaft 4. The shaft, which may be vertically adjusted by means of a screw 5, is mounted in bearings in the machine-table 2 which also carries spaced supports 1 for the trunnions 15, 16 of a rockable member 14. This member is adjustable axially of its trunnions by means of a graduated screwed sleeve 18, and is formed with an arc-shaped guide 21 and a slot 22 adapted to receive a tool-holder member 23, carrying a shaft 25 with a tool 28, and adapted to be moved by hand along the guide during grinding and to be locked in any angular position by screws 24; downward movement of the shaft is definitely limited by the engagement of a nut 46 thereon with an adjustable nut 26 screwing on an extension of the member 23. The tool may be retracted from the work by a handle 29 operating, through links 30, 31, a finger 32 engaging the driving-pulley 33, and the rockable member 14 may then be swung to carrv the tool clear of the work, the driving-belt 39 thus becoming slackened and rotation of the tool ceasing. The rockable member is locked out of position by the weighted arm 35 operated by a link 34; the movement of the member, when returnecl to position by a handle 36, is limited by its contact with an adjustable bumper 37. A gauge, Fig. 2, is provided for testing the work, and comprises a lever, pivoted at 51 to a vertically adjustable arm 49 pivotally carried by a horizontally swinging arm 48, the short arm 52 of the lever being adapted to be brought into contact with the work and the long arm 53 to be read at an index 54. The workholder is located in a pan 11 to retain abrasive and liquid.
