Abstract

1279406 Glow discharge lamps PLESSEY TELECOMMUNICATIONS RESEARCH Ltd 16 Oct 1969 [17 July 1968] 34043/68 Heading H1D [Also in Division G5] A display device comprises a gas discharge panel comprising a plurality of gas filled channels 1, 2 each with a plurality of electrodes 113a spaced along its length confronting one or more other electrodes 111, a plurality of common leads 103, 104, 105 connected in cyclic order to the plurality of electrodes and generating means connected to the leads supplying phase displaced voltage waveforms to shift display patterns along the rows. A train of signal pulses of ignite potential corresponding to the required display is applied to each start cathode 112, 122 and these are moved by the waveforms of sustain potential along the channels. The rows may be interconnected and signal pulses applied only to one cathode 112. In another embodiment there are only two common leads each connected to alternate cathodes 113a and anodes 111, 121 are replaced by a series of discrete anodes each at the mid point between cathodes 113a. These anodes may be joined to form vertical strips similar to the cathodes. The anodes are connected to a pair of common leads as are the cathodes and equal and opposite waveforms are applied to each lead of a pair, with a phase difference between each pair. To operate with A.C. potentials the electrodes are placed on the outside of glass plates 7, 9 which may have a SiO 2 layer deposited on their inner faces to form a more consistent surface. Additional electrodes across which a discharge is continuously maintained may be included. The device functions as a shift register and data can be obtained from the final cathode. The input cathode 112 may be at the centre of the panel and the display shifted either way.
