1279396 Checking flash points STANHOPE - SETA Ltd 28 Jan 1970 [28 Oct 1968] 51076/68 Heading G1D [Also in Division G3] To test whether a flammabel liquid 'flashes' at a predetermined critical temperature a cup 12 having a closing lid as shown in Fig.4 is heated electrically to the given temperature, approximately 2 mls of the liquid are introduced into the cup through hole 52 in the lid and allowed to achieve the temperature of the cup for a time measured by timer 36, and the lid is manipulated to allow air to enter the cup and to pass an ignition flame into the cup. The lid comprises a slider mounted in guides 42 and urged to the left in Fig.4 by a spring. A pilot flame issues from nozzle 22 on the slider and is arranged to automatically pivot towards the cup as apertures 46 and 48 respectively in the slider and lid are aligned by moving the slider to the right. The lid is mounted to the cup by hinge arrangement 38 and 40. The temperature of the cup is measured directly by thermometer 16. An electric circuit is described for maintaining the cup at the desired temperature, and the output transistor of that circuit may be situated near the cup 12 so that heat dissipated by it helps heat the cup. The circuit includes a pilot lamp 54 to indicate when the desired temperature is reached by cup 12. The pilot flame may use L.P.G. or butane gas.
