1279370 Clarifying sugar juices WALCHANDNAGER INDUSTRIES Ltd 12 May 1971 14448/71 Heading C6B A continuous lining and sulphitation unit for clarification of sugarcane juice comprises a main tank 4 containing upper and lower tanks 10, 14, and a duct 32 for feeding juice to be treated into the upper tank 10. Milk of lime or sulphur dioxide gas may be introduced into the juice through duct 34 or 36. The juice overflowing from the upper tank, which contains a stirrer 23 driven by a motor 25, passes over baffles 22 in an annular space 12 to an annular trough 8 from which it flows through a transfer duct (not shown) to the bottom 38 of the main tank 4, and a circulation through the lower tank 14 and an annular space 16 is maintained by sulphur dioxide gas injected at 18. Juice is withdrawn through ducts 58, an annular trough 60 and a discharge duct 62. Gas is vented from the lower tank through an annular gap 20 between the trough 8 and the base of the upper tank, a channel 26 which is open at the top to prevent entrainment of liquid by the gas, and vent pipes 28, 30. A baffle 24 over the tank 10 also prevents entrainment of liquid by gas passing to the vent. The trough 60 is vented by ducts 66, 28, 30. Valves are provided in the transfer duct between the trough 8 and the bottom 38 of the main tank so that the juice may be directed through a heater. Milk of lime may also be introduced through a duct (not shown) entering the bottom 38 of the main tank.
