1278817 Coutrolled-release medicaments G S BANKER and H GOODMAN 2 Sept 1969 [3 Sept 1968] 43480/69 Heading A5B [Also in Division C3] Orally administrable, sustained release compositions comprise a drug chemisorbed on the particles of a latex of a polymer which is hydratable in the gastro intestinal tract, the polymer containing acid groups of the drug is basic and basic groups if the drug is acidic. Suitable polymers are those formed by emulsion polymerisation of aqueous emulsions of the monomers listed in Specification 1278816. The product may be used as such in a liquid preparation or the polymer particles may be removed from suspension e.g. by filtration, centrifugation, spray-drying &c, either with or without initial flocculation as by addition of an electrolyte. Specific examples relate to preparations in which the drug is methapyrilene HCl. chlorpheniramine (base), chlorpromazine (HCl and benzoate) and codeine (base and phosphate), the resins being acrylic-copolymers having carboxylic acid groups.
