Abstract

1387929 Medicines comprising ion-exchange resins PHARMACIA AB 5 June 1972 [4 June 1971] 26106/72 Heading A5B [Also in Division C3] Pharmaceutical preparations useful in lowering the cholesterol content of blood comprise polymerisation product which contain residues of the diamine H 2 N(CH 2 ) 6 NH 2 (I) which residues are interconnected by bridges to form a three dimensional network, the bridges being bound to N atoms in the residues of I and comprise C 3-30 saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon chains substituted by at least one OH group and optionally broken by one or more oxygen atoms; the amino groups are present in a free form or as the cation portion of a non- toxic salt. The polymer is insoluble in water or other solvents but is capable of swelling in water to gel form, 1g. of the dry product in the form of an HCl salt in the presence of water swelling to at least 5 ml and at most 50 ml. The polymer is in grain form having a particle size of 1-1000Á and has an ionexchange capacity within the range 0.2-1 milliequivalents chloride ions, per 100g. of dry gel. A typical example is prepared by condensing hexamethylene diamine with epichlorhydrin by dispersion methods (see Division C3). The products may be administered orally either as such or suspended in liquids or in the form of granulates, tablets or capsules optionally in the presence of physiologically acceptable carriers.
