1278683 Oxyhalogen compounds NORTH AMERICAN ROCKWELL CORP 4 June 1969 28346/69 Heading C1A The invention comprises the compounds OClF 3 and MF.Cl 2 O, where M is an alkali metal. OClF 3 , oxychlorine trifluoride, has a melting point of about - 66‹ C. and a boiling point of about 29‹ C. and is useful as an oxidizer in rocket engines; it is made by reaction between Cl 2 O and excess F 2 at low temperature or by complexing Cl 2 O with an alkali metal fluoride and treating the product with excess F 2 ; the product is separated by fractional condensation. In examples, sodium, potassium, rubidium, and caesium fluorides are used. The compound MF.Cl 2 O may be used as a means of storing Cl 2 O, which is released on heating.
