Abstract
1278599 End face shaft seals CHARLES WESTON & CO Ltd 14 Aug 1969 [23 July 1968] 35099/68 Heading F2B An end face seal for a rotary shaft 1 comprises an L-section sealing ring 3 having a sealing face 3a urged against a co-operating sealing face 6a by an elastomeric ring 5 housed in a rigid case 4 and applying axial and radial forces to the ring 3. The case 4 is an interference fit on the shaft and has a radial web contacting the axial limb 3b of the ring 3. A lobe 5a on the ring 5 engages a corner of the ring 3. The face 6a is on a second L-section ring 6 urged towards the ring 3 by an elastomeric ring 8, similar to ring 5, housed in a rigid case 7 which is an interference fit in the shaft housing 2. Gaps may be provided at locations A to allow access to the cavities B of sealed fluid pressure to thereby increase the sealing face loading.
