Abstract

1278330 Vibration dampers SULZER BROS Ltd 29 Aug 1969 [30 Aug 1968] 43087/69 Heading F2S A vibration damper consists of an inertia mass 7 acted on by sets of resilient baffles 8, 8<SP>1</SP>, 9 which restrain its movement in three mutually perpendicular directions, the mass and the baffles being located in a housing 4 containing damping liquid. The mass and the baffles may be located in a single liquid-filled chamber (Fig. 3, not shown) or, as in Fig. 4, the mass and one set of baffles 9 may be within a liquid-filled inner chamber 15 on which other sets 8, 8<SP>1</SP> of baffles act, the outer housing 11 also containing liquid in communication, through ports 19, with the inner chamber. The baffles 8, 8<SP>1</SP> are dished discs. The baffles 9 may consist of (a) three or more sets of dished discs distributed around the periphery of the (cylindrical) mass; (b) a nested set of resilient sleeves surrounding the mass; or (c) a continuous spiral, e.g. a bifilar spiral as shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 1 (not shown) depicts such a damper bolted to a pipe-line to damp its axial and radial vibrations. The damper could, however, be built into the apparatus to be damped.
