1278319 Laminates TRW Inc 23 July 1969 37140/69 Heading B5N A method of making a laminated article comprises forming a stack comprising plastics sheet alternating with a liquid reaction mixture containing a polyfunctional polydiene prepolymer having at least 50% of its olefinic unsaturation in the form of pendant vinyl groups on alternate carbon atoms of an elongate backbone carbon chain, a polyfunctional organic chain extender capable of reacting with the functional groups on the polydiene and a peroxide free-radical initiator or an elastomeric reaction product of such a mixture, and heating to cure the mixture or the elastomer to a thermoset resin. The elastomer may be formed in situ by coating the sheets with the reactive mixture and heating prior to stacking; alternatively, the coated sheets may be stacked, heated to form a laminate comprising the elastomer and further heated to cure the elastomer. Specified plastics are polyethylene, fluorinated ethylene propylene copolymers, ethyl cellulose, nylon, polypropylene, tri-fluoromonochloroethylene copolymers, polyethylene terephthalate, polytetrafluoroethylene, homo- and copolymers of vinylchloride, polycarbonates and polyimides. Specified prepolymers are dihydroxy-1,2-polybutadiene, di-hydroxy - 3,4 - polyisoprene, dicarboxy - 1,2- polybutadiene and dicarboxy - 3,4 - polyisoprene. Specified chain extenders are diisocyanates, diacid halides, dicarboxylic acids and diesters when the functional groups of the prepolymer are hydroxyl groups and diepoxides, di-imines, diols and diaziridines when the functional groups are carboxyl groups. Decorative laminates may be formed by including a coloured paper in the stack.
