Abstract

1278288 Rotary fluid flowmeters L L POHL 28 Oct 1969 [28 Oct 1968] 52672/69 Heading F1F. A rotary fluid flowmeter comprising a turbine rotor 8 having a shaft 16 extending transversely to the flow directions, includes a circular inlet 2 tapering smoothly into a quadrangular crosssection throat of a venturi section 6 which opens into a main duct having at its outlet end a control vane 9 which at low flow-rates closes the duct. The fluid then flows through a branch duct 10 downstream of the rotor to again flow through the rotor to augment rotor rotation in the same direction and thence through a return duct 13 to rejoin the main duct past a control vane 14 which is mechanically coupled to the control vane 9 and at this time fully open. The vane 9 is spring-loaded so that at increased flow-rates it is opened against its spring and at the same time partially closes the vane 14. Fluid flow then being partially through the main duct and partially a reverse flow past the rotor and through the return duct. At high flowrates, the vane 9 is fully open and the vane 14 fully closed with all the flow passing through the main duct. By selecting the line of inclination of a guide vane 5, the throat area of the venturi, the venturi section 6 being replaceable by another section, and the loading of the spring the meter may be calibrated to give high sensitivity and linearity over a wide range of flow-rates. The shaft 16 is supported in jewel type bearings and the rotor is coupled to drive an index counter.
