Abstract
1278189 Anthracene RUTGERSWERKE AG 23 Dec 1970 [7 Jan 1970] 61049/70 Heading C5E Anthracene is recovered from aromatic oils or pyrolysis residues (e.g. containing 0À1-1% anthracene) by (a) concentrating the oil or residue by distillation until the anthracene content is 1-4% by wt., (b) further concentrating the concentrate by distillation and/or crystallization to give an anthracene content of 10- 25%; and (c) recrystallizing anthracene from the concentrated product using an alkyl-aryl ketone as recrystallization solvent. The preferred solvent is acetophenone which is used in a wt. ratio of acetophenone : concentrated product of 1 : 1-1 : 6. Preferably the starting materials are first treated by the method of Specification 1,261,977.
