Abstract

1278157 Rotary-scythe lawn mowers VICTA Ltd 1 July 1970 [2 July 1969 8 April 1970] 31782/70 Heading A1F A rotary-scythe lawnmower is fitted with a discharge chute to facilitate the efficient removal and collection of grass cuttings. The chute 31 is of a spiral form around the baseplate 12, extends over a major portion of the cutting circle, and has a substantially uniformly-rising helix angle throughout its length (in this embodiment, 11‹). The chute is built into the underside of the baseplate, and, with the cutting blades rotating clockwise as viewed from above, commences on the port side of the baseplate at a point 33 substantially on the transverse centre line. A fanning-out of the discharge stream is effected by an inward depression 39 in the outer wall of the tunnel 22, and the cuttings pass into the grass-catcher 27 over a greater width of the exit port in the rear wall 26. The chute is of a shape enabling the engine to be accommodated within its confines, and the low engine-mounting level 15 results in a shorter crank-shaft length (with the engine in a transverse alignment to the fore and aft direction of the baseplate), thus giving better resistance to operational shocks. The exhaust pipe of the engine can be turned downwardly to discharge directly through a port 43 in the floor of the baseplate. Also, an air-port 44 can be provided to draw cooling air over the cylinder cooling fins of the engine. A pivoted safety flap 28a is connected to the rear side of the wall 26, controlled by a spring catch mechanism 28, to allow the safe removal of the grass-catcher.
